Definition

Open is under-active while Emotional is over-active at Affectivity: feeling runs above a usable volume while the reception that would let it land stays narrow or closed. What is felt does not register in proportion to what is running — less lands than is there, rather than nothing landing at all. The signature asymmetry is that attending to feeling often stays primed and can run high while reception is what has closed: the watch continues, the taking-in does not. Where it reaches further, other ways of handling feeling can run high around the same load while reception narrows in the places it would otherwise reach — the body and other people most often, sometimes the unfamiliar. Those are conditions that can be present rather than a required spread. The presentations differ in kind — post-traumatic numbing alongside intact threat monitoring, an alexithymic shutdown where arousal is high but the feeling cannot be identified or described, compassion fatigue in caregiving work, and an anhedonic non-registration of what would otherwise be pleasure or contact — and neither why reception closed nor an order in which it opens is fixed by the mixed origin.
